Around a fifth of the population may suffer from headaches and migraines. Depending on the severity and duration of the attacks, individuals can be incapacitated with either condition. Migraines usually mean they are unable to meet the demands of leading a normal daily life. Whereas, a headache can be painful and debilitating, but is short lived in duration.

Sore heads can usually be traced back to a particular cause. For instance, an accident resulting in a head trauma can often leave the individual with residual headaches. Depending on the severity of the head injury the sore heads may gradually subside and are often treated with prescription drugs for pain relief.

A hangover after a night of excessive alcohol consumption, often results in an individual experiencing a headache. Many individuals preach that drinking a pint of cold water before going to sleep will help to prevent the worst effects of over indulgence the next morning. The water does help to combat the dehydration caused by alcohol, but the best way to avoid a hangover is to drink alcohol in moderation

Some of the non-medical remedies for a sore head include going for a walk in the fresh air. If a walk is not an option, finding a nice quiet corner to relax and do some deep breathing exercises helps to circulate the blood and replenishes the oxygen in the body. This will also help to banish stress and tension in the muscles, which can lead to sore heads.

Headaches can also be an indication that the individual needs an eye test. A visit to an optician can easily resolve the problem is the individual is suffering from eye strain and needs glasses or contact lenses. In the majority of cases a visit to the local pharmacy or health store provides access to numerous medical and natural remedies.

Migraines are more severe and harder to treat than a standard sore head. The sufferer can be incapacitated from carrying out their normal daily tasks due to the severity of their condition. They are unpredictable and can last for a day or for several days. The frequency with which they occur differs from one person to another.

Some people worry that headaches and migraines are symptoms of a more serious medical condition. That rarely proves to be the case. Individuals may need to go through a battery of medical test to achieve a diagnosis and be given the right medication to help control their symptoms. Anyone who suffers from frequent migraines can usually read their bodies warning signs of an impending attack.
